Charter Fishing in the ocean off Durban requires a vessel that offers both speed and comfort, but it is also imperative that you are fishing in safety. At forty-three feet, the ELANGENI is a big fishing boat.

Although fast, she is very stable and seaworthy because she was built of Burmese teak by master craftsmen in Cape Town to withstand any conditions the sea off Durban can throw at her.

The ELANGENI weighs seventeen tons and is powered by two brand new Yanmar 315 turbo charged Marine diesel engines that take our charter fishing guests at great speed from Durban harbour to our secret bottom fishing reefs or to the deep sea hunting grounds of Sailfish, Marlin, Wahoo, Dorado, Bonito and King Mackerel.

The ELANGENI is equipped with dual helms, a large, comfortable saloon, huge deck space for walk around fishing, a live bait well, ample seating above and below decks, a toilet and shower and a spacious flying bridge from which to view attacking game fish. A top of the range Furuno Chart Plotter (GPS) and Fish Finders assure the charter guests of fishing, fishing and yet more fishing.

‘Doc’ GERRY MURPHY is your skipper and the owner of the ELANGENI. He is an exciting character and one you will never forget. A master mariner, ‘Doc’ has been ‘ploughing’ the Indian Ocean for over thirty years and is one of the most experienced skippers on the East Coast of Africa.

He speaks five languages fluently, is a Doctor of Philosophy, a best selling author and in his youth was the heavyweight wrestling champion of the World- BUT - Let him share his passion for fishing with you!

Charlotte is Doc’s wife. She is jokingly referred to as the Admiral. She is the secretary and booking agent. Her vast experience in the travel industry is invaluable in attending to the special needs of the fishing charter guests. She has a wonderful sense of humour and is always open to suggestions on how to improve the service to our valued clients who become our friends and remain in touch on the web.

YO YO is a Swazi princess. Who says women can’t catch fish? Forget it! Apart from being a beautiful young woman, Yo Yo is also a highly competent crew and man, does this babe know how to attract the fish! If she had webbed feet she’d be a mermaid. She has almost completed her  training as a skipper in her own right. Her job is to spoil you and make sure that this fishing trip is one you will never forget.

PAMJI  is a Zulu maiden. She is an apprentice and in training under YO YO and the watchful eye of ‘Doc’. She is a ‘jack of all trades’. She prepares your bait and generally waits on you hand and foot.

Safe Deep Sea Fishing

A full complement of safety equipment is on board: EPIRB, which gives the boats exact position to aircraft, ships at sea and stations on land. RADAR, 3 VHF radios, RADAR, two life rafts and fifteen life jackets. We are in direct radio contact with the Port of Durban at all times when at sea. The ELANGENI is stringently annually inspected both in and out of the water by the South African Maritime Safety Authority.
